Does religion takes away from education?

Many southern baptist (I'm a baptist) disagrees with everything that's not in the Bible. For example, one of my friends parents want let them read the Da Vinci code or Harry Potter. And when evolution comes up in a conversation, they act as if the devel is speaking.
