Keeping Fresh Herbs as Houseplans - HELP!?

I love fresh herbs.. Ooh the wonder of summer.. fresh garden vegetables and wonderful home grown herbs. I really want to grow them indoors, but I live in upstate New York and it's cold here.. If I put them near a window for light, there's too much of a draft and they die. But if they're not near a window .. alas, not enough light. I'm not interested in messing with a grow light. Any easy, practical solutions for my herb growing woes?
