Suspect family friend of stealing... what are our options?

The only viable option to get the property returned is to call in the police. A lie detector test is not particularly expensive, but it is not useful in a court of law either. Another option is small claims court, or a lawsuit which would require the hiring of a nd paying for a lawyer.
